Dry lyophilised peptide keeps in the fridge for weeks to months, and for longer storage in a freezer at minus 20 degrees Celsius, where many peptides last a year or more. A reconstituted solution is kept in the fridge at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius and used within 2 to 4 weeks. The solution is not frozen.
A peptide degrades from heat, light and repeated thawing, not merely from the passage of time. This article separates two situations: powder in a sealed vial and liquid after dissolution.
How do you store the lyophilised powder?
Lyophilised powder is stable as long as it stays dry and cool. Room temperature is acceptable only briefly, for example during a few days in transit. For longer periods the peptide is kept cold and away from light, ideally in a dark glass vial.

Peptide manufacturers set a stricter condition in their guidelines. Bachem, one of the largest peptide manufacturers in the world, recommends storage below minus 15 degrees Celsius for maximum stability, and for the lyophilised form a range of minus 20 to minus 80 degrees. A domestic freezer sits at the upper end of that range, and for most molecules that is enough.
Why does a peptide draw in moisture, and what follows from that?
Peptides are hygroscopic, meaning they absorb water from the air. Moisture lowers the peptide content of the vial and worsens its stability. A cold vial taken straight from the freezer behaves like a glass of iced water: vapour condenses on its walls and on the powder.
Hence a rule that is easy to skip. Before you open a vial, wait until it reaches ambient temperature, ideally in a closed container with a desiccant. Reseal an opened vial immediately, not after you have finished all the work.
How do you store the finished solution?
Keep the solution in the fridge, at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. With bacteriostatic water it is normally used within 2 to 4 weeks. Without a bacteriostatic agent, that is after dissolving in plain sterile water, the solution has to be used sooner, because nothing holds back bacterial growth in it. Do not put the finished solution in the freezer. Freezing forms ice crystals that damage peptide molecules during thawing.
A separate limit applies to the multiple-dose vial you puncture repeatedly. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and chapter 797 of the USP pharmacopoeia set a default of 28 days from first puncture for such a preserved container. A shorter limit from the manufacturer and the expiry date on the label take precedence.
Why should a peptide not be thawed repeatedly?
Every freeze and thaw cycle introduces stresses that encourage clumping and breakdown of molecules. If you keep a peptide in the freezer, divide it into small portions beforehand and thaw only as much as you need at a time.
The rule is simple: five small vials opened one after another are better than one large vial opened five times. Every opening means another dose of moisture and another temperature cycle.
Which peptides degrade faster than others?
Stability depends on the composition of the molecule. Bachem guidance notes that peptides containing tryptophan, methionine or cysteine require particular care, because they oxidise easily. Peptides with tryptophan, methionine, cysteine, asparagine or glutamine generally have a shorter shelf life.
In practice this means one rule does not fit every vial in the fridge. An example of a molecule that is unusually unstable in solution is HGH Fragment 176-191. If the manufacturer gives its own recommendation for a specific peptide, that takes precedence over the general rule.
What are the most common storage mistakes?
- Keeping dry powder on a windowsill or in a cupboard, in warmth and light.
- Freezing the finished solution instead of keeping it in the fridge.
- Thawing the same vial from the freezer repeatedly.
- Opening a cold vial straight away, without waiting for ambient temperature.
- Keeping a solution made with plain sterile water as long as one made with bacteriostatic water.
- Keeping a peptide in a clear vial exposed to light.
- Counting the limit from the date of purchase instead of from the first puncture of the vial.
How do you tell that something has gone wrong?
A finished solution should be clear. A cloudy liquid or visible particles mean the solution is not used. That is the only sign visible to the naked eye, which is why it is worth holding the vial up to the light before every withdrawal.
Dry powder gives fewer clues. Clumped or damp lyophilised powder points to contact with moisture, but a partial loss of activity does not change the appearance of the powder. With peptides, therefore, what counts is the storage history rather than a visual check.
