Recovery peptides are short chains of amino acids expected to act as signalling molecules and speed up tissue repair. Two names dominate this group: BPC-157 and TB-500. Their popularity rests mostly on animal studies, not on large human trials.
Neither is an approved medicine. BPC-157 holds no approval for any indication, and TB-500 has been tested in humans in only two small phase 2 studies. Both are banned in sport by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

What are recovery peptides and how are they studied?
Recovery peptides are peptides credited with a signalling role in the repair of soft tissue: tendons, ligaments, muscle and the lining of the digestive tract. In practice the term covers BPC-157, TB-500 and ready-made blends of the two. It is not a pharmacological class. It is an everyday label for peptides associated with healing.
How does BPC-157 work?
BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide of 15 amino acids, based on a fragment of a protective protein found in human gastric juice. It acts as a signalling molecule and may activate several repair pathways at once.
In animal studies BPC-157 accelerated healing of the Achilles tendon, damaged muscle and ligaments, and protected the gastric lining. The mechanisms described include formation of new blood vessels, collagen synthesis and activation of fibroblasts.
The key caveat concerns the quality of that evidence. Practically all of the strong material on BPC-157 comes from animal work. There are no large human trials, and the peptide has not been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for any indication.
How does TB-500 work?
TB-500 is a synthetic peptide related to thymosin beta-4, a protein studied for its role in cell migration and blood vessel formation. Online it is sold mostly as a research reagent, usually without full labelling.
Human data are sparse. Only two small phase 2 studies exist, no phase 3 trial has been completed, and TB-500 holds no approval for any medical use. The Food and Drug Administration has placed it on a list of substances raising safety concerns.
What can you expect from recovery peptides, and what can you not?
The picture is the same for BPC-157 and TB-500: promising signals from preclinical work, and no confirmation of efficacy or safety in humans at scale.
What the available research does show:
- In animal models both peptides accelerated tissue healing and stimulated the formation of blood vessels.
- BPC-157 protected the digestive tract in animal studies.
- The side effect profile in humans has not been described in controlled trials.
What the research does not show:
- There are no large clinical trials confirming that either peptide heals injuries in humans.
- No doses or schedules of proven efficacy and safety have been established.
- Nothing is known about the effects of long-term use.
Are recovery peptides allowed in sport?
They are not. The World Anti-Doping Agency classes BPC-157 and TB-500 as prohibited at all times, both in and out of competition. TB-500 appears in the category of non-approved substances.
A sanction does not require a positive test. One Canadian athlete received a four-year ban for BPC-157 and TB-500 without a positive sample, on the basis of other evidence. For an athlete subject to anti-doping control, using these peptides carries a real risk of disqualification.
How should you read peptide shop descriptions?
Phrases such as “proven to accelerate healing” almost always refer to animal studies, even when that is not stated. Before you treat such a description as fact, check whether human research stands behind it or only animal models.
