BPC-157 is a peptide that sped up ligament healing and eased joint inflammation in animal studies. In humans there is one published joint study: after an injection into the knee, 11 of 12 people reported a clear improvement in pain. A 2025 systematic review states that in 7 of them the relief lasted more than six months. Below we collect everything known about BPC-157 and joints, from ligaments to the knee.
What is BPC-157?
BPC-157 is a short peptide made of 15 amino acids, originally isolated from gastric juice. Its sequence is given in a 2010 paper: GEPPPGKPADDAGLV. It was first studied as a medicine protecting the digestive tract, under the name PL 14736.
Over time researchers noticed that it also speeds up the healing of tendons, muscles and ligaments. A 2025 review describes several mechanisms: the formation of new blood vessels, stimulation of connective tissue cells and an anti-inflammatory effect. This works especially in tissues with a poor blood supply, such as tendons. More about the molecule itself is in the guide on BPC-157 research.
What did the knee study in humans show?
The only study of BPC-157 in a human joint was published in 2021 in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine. It was a review of the records of 17 patients with knee pain from one clinic in Florida. The patients received an injection of BPC-157 into the joint, alone or together with thymosin beta-4, and 16 of them were interviewed by phone.
| Group | Number of people | Clear improvement in pain |
|---|---|---|
| BPC-157 alone | 12 | 11 people, or 91.6 percent |
| BPC-157 with thymosin beta-4 | 4 | 3 people, or 75 percent |
| Total | 16 | 14 people, or 87.5 percent |
The study covered different types of knee pain, without dividing them by cause. The injection usually took place six months to a year before the interview. The 2025 systematic review states that in 7 of the 12 people on BPC-157 alone the relief lasted more than six months.
How strong are these data?
This study is an important signal, but not proof in the strict sense. It had no comparison group, and patients rated their pain from memory in a phone interview. The authors did not use function questionnaires or magnetic resonance imaging.
The authors themselves write that further studies are needed with pain divided by cause and with follow-up imaging. The 2025 review rated all knowledge about BPC-157 in orthopaedics as level IV and V evidence. Of the 36 papers included, 35 were preclinical studies, and one was this knee study.
What did the ligament studies show?
Closest to the knee is a study of the medial collateral ligament in rats, the ligament on the inner side of the knee. It was published in 2010 in the Journal of Orthopaedic Research. The ligament was cut surgically, and healing was followed for 90 days.
- Given into the abdominal cavity: once a day, improved healing.
- Cream on the injury site: a thin layer, improved healing.
- In drinking water: throughout the study period, improved healing.
With every route of administration the ligament healed better in terms of function, strength and tissue structure. The authors suggest BPC-157 as a possible therapy for acute ligament injuries. Results for tendons and ligaments are collected more broadly in the guide on peptides and tendon injuries.
Does BPC-157 ease joint inflammation?
In a 1997 study in rats, BPC-157 eased experimental joint inflammation induced by Freund's adjuvant. The changes developed less after a single dose, and even less with daily dosing.
In treating established inflammation, the effect appeared after two weeks and lasted even after a year. In the same study BPC-157 protected the stomach and gut from damage caused by painkillers from the NSAID group. This matters for people who reach for such medicines when their joints hurt. Results for the digestive tract are described in the guide on BPC-157 and the gut and stomach.
What is known about safety?
According to the 2025 review, animal studies showed no harmful effects in several organ systems tested. In a 2025 pilot, two people received 10 mg of BPC-157 intravenously, and 20 mg the next day. Markers of heart, liver, kidney and thyroid function and blood sugar did not change, and the participants reported no side effects.
Two people, however, is a very small group, and large human safety studies do not exist. The 2025 review also draws attention to product quality from unregulated sources. That is why it is worth checking the certificate of analysis when buying, as described in the guide on how to spot genuine peptides.
BPC-157 is on the list of substances banned in sport. Athletes subject to anti-doping testing may not use it, as described in the guide on BPC-157, TB-500 and the WADA ban.
How much does BPC-157 cost?
The shop offers BPC-157 in several variants. BPC-157 5 mg Bio-Peptide costs 20 EUR and is in stock. BPC-157 5 mg Genheal costs 20 EUR, and BPC-157 20 mg Nouveaux 65 EUR, both on backorder.
A price per milligram comparison is in the guide BPC-157 5 mg or 20 mg. Why BPC-157 is combined with TB-500 is explained in the guide on combining these two peptides. The products in the shop are material for laboratory research, not a medicine, and all variants are listed on the BPC-157 page.
