Melanotan II is a synthetic form of alpha-MSH, the melanocyte stimulating hormone, and it produces skin pigmentation. It is unlicensed and largely unstudied, with no approval for any medical use in any country. Sold as research material, not as a medicine.

What is in the vial

Bio-Peptide and Genheal both supply 10 mg vials of lyophilised powder. A 10 mg vial with 2 ml of bacteriostatic water gives 5 mg per millilitre; the arithmetic is in the guide on reconstitution. The Australian regulator specifically found inconsistent amounts of the substance in tested products, so with this molecule the batch certificate is not a formality.

Not the same as melanotan I

Afamelanotide, sometimes called melanotan I, is an approved medicine for erythropoietic protoporphyria, a rare blood disorder. Melanotan II is a different molecule with no registration anywhere.

What three regulators have said

The British MHRA warned in November 2008 that the safety of these products is unknown and that advertising and selling them in the United Kingdom is illegal. The United States FDA issued a warning to the distributor Melanocorp Inc. on 7 February 2007. The Australian TGA published an alert after finding inconsistent amounts of the substance in tested products.

Reported effects

Short term: facial flushing, reduced appetite, nausea and vomiting, and in men spontaneous erections with yawning. Long term, reports include melanoma, darkening and appearance of new moles, nail discolouration, rhabdomyolysis and encephalopathy syndrome.

The darkening of moles is not merely cosmetic: it makes melanoma harder to detect. That sentence belongs here rather than in a footnote.

How it differs from PT-141

PT-141, bremelanotide, is a metabolite of melanotan II and acts on the same receptor family, but it took the opposite path: it was developed as a medicine, tested and approved in the United States for one narrow indication. Melanotan II was never taken through that process at all. The two are described together in the libido and tanning group.

Status

Unlicensed everywhere. Selling and advertising it is explicitly illegal in the United Kingdom. We publish no dosing schedules, and this is the page in the catalogue where we would least want them repeated.

Handling and verification

Supplied as lyophilised powder. Storage rules change once it is dissolved: see storage. Check the code under the hologram and the batch certificate as described in check your product. We ship within Poland and abroad; outside Poland the cost is quoted individually, depending on weight and destination country, and local rules on this substance are the buyer’s responsibility. Details: shipping and payments and legal warning.

Questions

Is melanotan II approved anywhere?

No. It has no approval for any medical use in any country, and selling it in the United Kingdom is illegal.

Is it the same as afamelanotide?

No. Afamelanotide, sometimes called melanotan I, is an approved medicine for erythropoietic protoporphyria. Melanotan II is a different molecule.

What are the reported long-term effects?

Reports include melanoma, darkening and appearance of new moles, nail discolouration, rhabdomyolysis and encephalopathy syndrome.

Why does mole darkening matter?

Because it makes melanoma harder to detect, which turns a cosmetic effect into a diagnostic problem.
