Peptides do not have one legal status. Some are prescription medicines, such as semaglutide and tirzepatide. Some are unapproved substances sold as research material, such as BPC-157, TB-500 and CJC-1295. Many of them are also prohibited in sport. Which group a given peptide falls into depends on the molecule and on how it is presented to the buyer.

This article sorts out the three most common situations and points to what is worth checking before you order. It is not legal advice. Before buying, importing or using a peptide, check its current status where you live and consult a doctor or a lawyer.

Which peptides are prescription medicines?

Prescription medicines include semaglutide in the preparations Ozempic and Wegovy, tirzepatide in Mounjaro, and tesamorelin. They reach a patient lawfully only on the basis of a prescription. Selling a prescription medicine to a person without a prescription is against the law, however a shop describes the product.

This is the clearest line in the whole subject. If a molecule is an approved medicine in your country, no wording on a label changes that.

When is a peptide sold as research material?

Some peptides have no approval as a medicine and go on sale described as a research reagent. Whether a substance is a medicinal product is decided in European Union law by two criteria: presentation and function. The presentation criterion covers a substance presented as having properties for treating or preventing disease. The function criterion covers a substance administered to a human being in order to modify physiological functions by pharmacological, immunological or metabolic action.

A peptide sold strictly as a reagent, marked “not for human consumption”, without claims of treatment and intended for laboratory use, usually does not meet the presentation criterion. The situation changes when the same peptide is presented as a substitute for an approved medicine. An unapproved GLP-1 peptide shown as an alternative to Ozempic or Mounjaro falls within the definition of a medicinal product and under the ban on advertising.

The “for research” label also changes nothing about the quality of the preparation. It gives the buyer no guarantee of composition, purity or safety of the kind required of an approved medicine.

Does the law differ from country to country?

The definition of a medicinal product is harmonised across the European Union, so the two criteria above work in the same way in every member state. What is not harmonised is everything around them: rules on distance selling, on importing substances for personal use, and customs practice. Outside the European Union the differences are larger still.

Two practical consequences follow for anyone ordering from abroad. First, the status of the same molecule can differ between the country of dispatch and the country of delivery, and it is the rules of the destination country that decide whether a parcel may enter. Which peptides are prohibited in sport?

The World Anti-Doping Agency lists among prohibited substances BPC-157, TB-500 and GHRH analogues and growth hormone secretagogues such as CJC-1295 and ipamorelin. The prohibition applies at all times, in competition and out of competition.

A sanction does not depend on a positive test. A ban can be imposed on other evidence, for example possession of a preparation or purchase records. What to check before buying or importing a peptide

Frequently asked questions

Can a peptide described as “for research” be bought lawfully?

It depends on the molecule and on how the offer is worded. There is no general ban on research reagents, but if the peptide is at the same time an approved medicine, or is presented as a substitute for a medicine, the rules on medicinal products apply.

Does the “not for human consumption” label release the seller from those rules?

Not in every situation. If the offer comes with claims of treatment or comparisons with an approved medicine, the product falls within the definition of a medicinal product despite that label.

Whose law applies when a parcel crosses a border?

The rules of the destination country decide whether a parcel may enter it, and responsibility for complying with them rests with the buyer. It is worth checking those rules before ordering rather than after.

Are recovery and growth hormone peptides prohibited in sport?

Yes. BPC-157, TB-500, GHRH analogues and growth hormone secretagogues are on the World Anti-Doping Agency list and are prohibited at all times.

Where can I check whether a peptide is an approved medicine?

In the register of the medicines agency of your country, and in the European Union also in the European Medicines Agency database. A pharmacist is worth asking as well.
