Nouveaux Ltd. supplies this product as a dual-chamber cartridge: 2 mg of freeze-dried powder in one chamber and 1 ml of solvent in the other. What follistatin 344 did in patients
Follistatin 344 is one of the few molecules of this group that have reached humans. It was tested in two studies at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus. Patients received the follistatin 344 gene by injection into the muscles of both thighs. The main measure was the distance covered in a 6-minute walk test.

Muscle samples taken in the first study showed less fibrous tissue, and the muscle fibres were larger. The researchers recorded no side effects. In the second study, four treated patients improved their walk by 58 to 153 metres. Inclusion body myositis usually affects people over 50, so the result concerns the muscles of older people.
How the studies in humans came about
The way to patients was opened by a 2009 study in macaques. The same Ohio team gave the follistatin 344 gene into the monkeys' quadriceps. The muscles grew clearly and lastingly, and their strength increased. After a long follow-up, the researchers found no abnormal changes in the structure or function of the main organs.
The 344 variant was chosen on purpose. It circulates in the blood and binds poorly to other cells, so it acts mainly on skeletal muscle. The human studies had no random assignment to placebo and involved patients, not healthy people. They gave the gene, not the ready-made protein this cartridge contains. So they show the direction in which the molecule acts, not the effect of a particular dosing schedule.
